Noel Lloyd (born December 26, 1946 – died June 7, 2019) was an important Welsh academic. He was the Vice-Chancellor of Aberystwyth University from 2004 until he retired in 2011. This means he was like the head of the university.

A Career in Academia

Noel Lloyd started his university journey at the University of Cambridge. He studied Mathematics there and earned his PhD. He also worked as a research fellow at St John’s College.

In 1975, he moved to Aberystwyth University. There, he became a Professor of Mathematics. He also held several other important roles. These included Dean of Science and Pro Vice-Chancellor. From 1999 to 2004, he was the Registrar and Secretary. After retiring in 2011, he became a Distinguished Research Professor at the university until 2016.

Important Contributions

Noel Lloyd was recognized for his work in higher education in Wales. In 2010, he received the Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) award. This is a special honor from the Queen.

After he retired in 2011, he was chosen to be a Fellow of the Learned Society of Wales. This group recognizes top experts in Wales. In 2012, he also became an Honorary Member of the Gorsedd. This is a cultural society in Wales.

Working for Wales

Noel Lloyd was an independent member of the Commission on Devolution in Wales. This group, also known as the Silk Commission, looked at how Wales could have more power over its own decisions. They wrote reports for the UK Government in 2012 and 2014.

He also served as a Judicial Appointments Commissioner from 2012 until his death. This role involved helping to choose judges.

Noel Lloyd's research focused on Nonlinear Systems. He wrote many papers about Nonlinear Differential Equations. These are complex areas of mathematics.

He was also an elder at Capel y Morfa, Aberystwyth, a local church. He was the church secretary for many years. He also chaired the Church and Society Department of the Presbyterian Church of Wales. He held a special diploma from Trinity College of Music, London.

Noel Lloyd passed away on June 7, 2019. He was survived by his wife, Dilys, their two children, and two grandchildren.
