Noemí Gerstein (November 10, 1910 – June 14, 1996) was an important Argentine artist. She was famous for her sculptures, illustrations, and other forms of visual art. Gerstein was known for trying new materials and creating unique abstract pieces.

Who Was Noemí Gerstein?

Noemí Gerstein was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, on November 10, 1910. She lived and worked in her hometown for most of her life.

Her Artistic Journey

In 1934, Noemí began her art training with a famous artist named Alfredo Bigatti. In the 1950s, she received a special grant from the government. This allowed her to travel to France. There, she studied at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière in Paris. Her teacher was a well-known sculptor named Ossip Zadkine.

In 1952, Gerstein won an important design competition. It was for a monument called the Unknown Political Prisoner Monument. This project aimed to honor people who were imprisoned for their beliefs.

What Kind of Art Did She Make?

Noemí Gerstein's artworks were mostly abstract. This means her art did not show real-life things exactly as they look. Instead, she used shapes, colors, and textures to express ideas and feelings. She loved to "experiment with new materials." This means she tried out different things to make her art.

She especially liked to create sculptures using metal. An example is her work called Constellation (1963). For this piece, she used many small pieces of tubing to create a unique shape.

Noemí Gerstein passed away on June 14, 1996.
