The Rivière Noire (which means Black River in English) is a small river in Quebec, Canada. It's like a smaller stream that flows into a bigger river. The Black River joins the rivière de l'Esturgeon, which then flows into the mighty Saint Lawrence River.
This river is found in the Montérégie region of Quebec. It passes through two main towns:
- Saint-Rémi
- Saint-Isidore
The area around the river is mostly farmland. During winter, the river usually freezes over from mid-December to the end of March. However, it's safest to walk or play on the ice from late December to early March. The amount of water in the river changes with the seasons, especially after rain or during the spring thaw in March or April.
River's Journey
The Black River starts in a farming area near a road called chemin du rang Sainte-Thérèse. This starting point is about 3.8 kilometres (2.4 mi) southwest of Saint-Rémi. It's also about 5.1 kilometres (3.2 mi) southeast of Saint-Isidore.
From its source, the Black River flows west for about 4.2 kilometres (2.6 mi). It drops about 3 metres (9.8 ft) in height along its path. The river flows under the bridge of Chemin Saint-Régis, which is also known as Route 207.
The Black River then meets the rivière de l'Esturgeon. From there, the water travels another 10.8 kilometres (6.7 mi) along the Esturgeon River. Finally, it flows for 13.3 kilometres (8.3 mi) along the Châteauguay River before reaching the huge Saint Lawrence River.
Naming the River
The name "Rivière Noire" was officially recognized on August 17, 1978. This was done by the Commission de toponymie du Québec, which is the group in Quebec responsible for naming places.
