Nonnell (/ˈnɒnɪl/) is a small, unincorporated community located in Muhlenberg County, Kentucky, United States. An "unincorporated community" means it's a place where people live, but it doesn't have its own local government like a city or town. Instead, it's managed by the county.
A Look Back at Nonnell's History
Nonnell wasn't always called Nonnell! This community was first known as Elk Valley. It got its current name from a man named John Lennon. He worked as a maintenance supervisor for the Louisville and Nashville Railroad. The community's name, Nonnell, is simply his last name spelled backward.
For a while, between 1916 and 1931, the local post office had a different name: Tarma. It's not clear why it was called Tarma during that time.
Famous People from Nonnell
Even small communities can be the birthplace of notable individuals!
- Bill J. Dukes, who became a politician in Alabama, was born in Nonnell in 1927. At that time, the community was still known as Tarma.
