North Country Cheviots

The North Country Cheviot is a popular type of sheep. Farmers mainly raise these sheep for their meat. They first came from Scotland.

Where Do They Come From?

In 1791, a man named Sir John Sinclair brought some female sheep, called ewes, to northern Scotland. These ewes came from the Cheviot Hills, which are close to the border with England. He named these sheep "Cheviots" after the hills where they lived.

Later, another type of hill sheep was brought to central Scotland. This led to a clear difference between the sheep in northern Scotland and those in the south. Many experts believe that other sheep breeds, like the English and Border Leicesters, were mixed with the North Country Cheviots around this time. This mixing made the North Country Cheviots bigger. They also grew longer wool and grew up faster. These northern sheep are about twice the size of their southern relatives.

Forming a Sheep Society

In 1912, sheep breeders in northern Scotland created the North Country Sheep Breeders Association. This group helped manage sheep shows and sales. Later, in 1945, the group changed its name to the North Country Cheviot Sheep Society. This new society helps register sheep, promotes the breed, and works to make the sheep even better.

What Makes Them Special?

How They Look

North Country Cheviots are considered a large type of sheep. They have a deep, wide, and long body. Their heads and legs are covered with short, white hair. They have a long, curved nose, which is called a "roman nose," and they do not have horns. Their nostrils and eyes usually have black outlines.

Their Personality and Strengths

These sheep are very tough and independent. They do well in rough weather and on difficult pastures. Female North Country Cheviots give birth easily and are excellent mothers. Their lambs are strong when they are born and have a good chance of surviving.

Even though these sheep grow at an average speed, they produce high-quality meat. North Country Cheviots are also great for breeding with other types of sheep. They pass on their good mothering skills and desirable meat qualities to their lambs. This breed also tends to live and work longer than many other sheep breeds.

How Much Do They Weigh?
