The North Dakota Mill and Elevator is a very important place in Grand Forks, North Dakota. It is the biggest flour mill in the entire United States. This mill is special because it is owned by the state government of North Dakota. It's the only state-owned mill in the country! A group called the North Dakota Industrial Commission makes sure it runs smoothly. The people on this commission are chosen by voters.

History of the Mill

The North Dakota Mill and Elevator Association started working on October 22, 1922. The state built this mill for a good reason. Many wheat farmers felt that big companies in Minneapolis, Minnesota were not fair. These companies, like railroads and other mills, made it hard for farmers to get a good price for their wheat.

Farmers, especially immigrants, felt they were being treated unfairly by large businesses. In the early 1900s, Minneapolis was the main place where North Dakota farmers sold their wheat. But after paying for shipping, farmers got very little money for their crops.

The Nonpartisan League was a political group that led the state government at that time. They wanted to help farmers get a better deal. So, they decided to build the North Dakota Mill. This way, farmers could sell their wheat directly to a state-owned mill. This helped them get fairer prices for their hard work.

The North Dakota Mill has seven different milling units. These are like big machines that grind wheat into flour. It also has a large storage area called a terminal elevator. This is where they keep lots of wheat before it's milled.

The mill also has a packing warehouse. Here, they prepare flour and other products to be shipped out. The mill makes many things besides just flour. They also create mixes for bread machines and pancakes. You can even find organic wheat products from the mill.
