The North Dakota Mill and Elevator is a very important place in Grand Forks, North Dakota. It is the biggest flour mill in the whole United States. This mill is special because it is owned by the state government of North Dakota. It's the only state-owned mill in the country! A group called the North Dakota Industrial Commission manages it. The people on this commission are chosen by voters.

History of the Mill

State Mill, Grand Forks, ND 1915
Postcard of the mill in its early years

The North Dakota Mill and Elevator Association began working on October 22, 1922. The state built this mill for an important reason. Many wheat farmers in the area felt that big companies in Minneapolis, Minnesota were not fair to them. These companies owned the railroads and other flour mills.

Farmers often got very low prices for their wheat. This was after paying for shipping their crops to Minneapolis. The Nonpartisan League was a political group that led the state government at the time. They wanted to help farmers get a better deal. So, they decided to build the North Dakota Mill. This way, farmers could sell their wheat closer to home and get fairer prices.

The North Dakota Mill has seven different milling units. These units help turn wheat into flour. It also has a large storage building called a terminal elevator. This is where lots of grain is kept safe.

The mill also has a special warehouse. Here, they pack flour and other products into bags for shipping. The mill makes many different things. Besides flour, they also create mixes for bread machines. They make pancake mixes too. You can even find organic wheat products from this mill.
