North Portland is often called "NoPo" by locals. It also used to be known as "the Fifth Quadrant." This is because Portland was originally divided into four main sections (like a cross), and North Portland was a bit separate. Now, with a new area called South Portland added in 2020, it's still a unique part of the city.
What Makes North Portland Special?
North Portland is home to some important places.
- The Portland International Raceway is here, where you can watch exciting races.
- You'll also find the University of Portland, a well-known college.
- The Port of Portland has huge facilities in North Portland. This is where big ships bring in and send out cargo, like goods and products, helping trade for the whole region.
Famous Bridges and Connections
North Portland is connected to the industrial part of Northwest Portland by the amazing St. Johns Bridge.
- This bridge is a type called a "suspension bridge." It's 2,067 ft (630.0 m) long!
- It was finished in 1931 and later got a big update between 2003 and 2005 to keep it strong and safe.
History and Development
North Portland has an interesting history, especially from the time of World War II.
- During World War II, a planned community called Vanport was built nearby. It was located between the city and the Columbia River.
- Vanport grew very quickly and became the second-largest city in Oregon!
- Sadly, in 1948, a terrible flood completely wiped out Vanport.
Another housing project from the wartime era was Columbia Villa.
- Columbia Villa was rebuilt and updated between 2003 and 2005.
- It reopened with a new name: New Columbia.
- This new community offers different types of homes, including public housing, rental homes, and houses that families can own.
Getting Around North Portland
Public transportation is important in North Portland.
- In 2004, the MAX Yellow Line light rail opened.
- This train line runs along North Interstate Avenue, following alongside I-5, which is a major highway.
- The MAX Yellow Line makes it easy for people to travel through North Portland, though it doesn't cross the Columbia River.
