The North Sydney Bus Depot is a special place where buses are kept and looked after. It is located in the Sydney suburb of Neutral Bay. This depot is run by State Transit, which helps people travel all around Sydney.
A Look Back at the Depot's History
The North Sydney Bus Depot has an interesting past. It didn't start out as a bus depot at all!
From Trams to Buses
On 3 June 1909, this site first opened as the North Sydney Tram Depot. A "depot" is like a big garage where vehicles are stored, cleaned, and repaired. This tram depot replaced an older one called the Ridge Street Tram Depot.
Later, on 15 September 1940, a new bus depot was built right next to the tram depot. This meant the site had both trams and buses.
Changes Over Time
In June 1958, the tram network in North Sydney stopped running. Because of this, the tram depot closed down. The land where the tram depot stood was then sold. It was later redeveloped into the Big Bear Shopping Centre.
Around the same time, in July 1958, a new and bigger bus depot opened in Willoughby. This meant the North Sydney Bus Depot became a "satellite depot." A satellite depot is a smaller facility that supports a main depot, often used for parking buses or minor checks.
Buses Today
As of December 2020, the North Sydney Bus Depot is home to 66 buses. These buses help transport many people every day across Sydney.
