Range of the Northern Barred Frog

The northern barred frog (Mixophyes schevilli) is a big frog that lives on the ground. You can find it in the warm, tropical parts of northern Queensland, Australia.

Appearance of the Northern Barred Frog

Dorsal patterning of the Northern Barred Frog

The northern barred frog is quite large. It can grow up to 10 centimetres long! This frog has strong legs and arms. It also has a big head and large eyes. Its back is usually brown or copper in colour. It has darker, uneven spots down the middle of its back.

A dark line runs from its nose, through its eye, and over its eardrum. This line goes all the way to its shoulder. Just like other Mixophyes frogs, the northern barred frog has stripes across its legs. Its toes are fully webbed, which helps it swim. However, its fingers are not webbed. You can easily see its eardrum, called the tympanum.

Habitat and Habits

The northern barred frog lives in thick, tropical rainforests. It likes to stay close to fast-flowing streams. This frog usually hides and hunts for food in the fallen leaves on the ground.

Life Cycle and Reproduction

Like some other barred frogs, this species lays its eggs on the banks of streams. When it rains, the eggs are washed into the stream. There, the tadpoles hatch from the eggs. These tadpoles are very big! They can grow up to 12.5 centimetres long. The male frog makes a deep "wahk" sound. It calls from high up on the stream bank to attract a mate.
