The Volcan Cacao moss salamander, officially known as Nototriton guanacaste, is a small type of salamander. It belongs to a group of salamanders called the Plethodontidae family. This special salamander is found only in one specific place on Earth: the Cordillera de Guanacaste mountain range in Costa Rica.

About the Volcan Cacao Moss Salamander

This unique salamander gets its name from the Volcan Cacao, a volcano in the area where it lives. It's called a "moss salamander" because it often lives among moss and other plants in its forest home.

Where Does It Live?

The Volcan Cacao moss salamander lives in a very particular kind of place. Its natural habitat is in tropical moist montane forests. These are forests found on mountains where there is a lot of rain and moisture, making them perfect for salamanders that need damp environments to survive.

Because it is endemic to the Cordillera de Guanacaste, it means this salamander is native to and found only in that specific region of Costa Rica. You won't find it living naturally anywhere else in the world!
