Novella Christine Nelson (born December 17, 1939 – died August 31, 2017) was a talented American actress and singer. She became well-known for her singing on and off Broadway stages, and in special music venues called cabarets.

Novella started her film career when she was 39 years old. Her first small part was in the 1977 movie An Unmarried Woman. For the next several decades, she continued to act in many movies and television shows. Many people might remember her best as Mrs. Tate in the 2002 movie Antwone Fisher.

Novella Nelson was born in Brooklyn, New York, on December 17, 1939. Her parents were James and Evelyn Nelson. Her father worked as a pastor and a taxi driver. Her mother was an executive assistant at a magazine company called Women's Wear Daily.

From Science to Stage

As an African American, Novella attended Brooklyn College in the late 1950s. This college was mostly white at the time. She first studied biochemistry, which is a type of science. However, she took a speech class that was actually an acting course. In this class, she was asked to perform in a play. She played the role of Berenice, the housekeeper, in The Member of the Wedding. After acting in this play and others, Novella decided to change her major. She switched to theater, choosing to become an actress instead of a scientist!

Later Years

Novella Nelson passed away from cancer on August 31, 2017. She was 77 years old and died in her hometown of Brooklyn, New York.

Film and Television Work

Novella Nelson appeared in many films and TV shows throughout her career. Some of her notable film roles include The Cotton Club (1984), Green Card (1990), and A Walk Among the Tombstones (2014). On television, she was seen in popular shows like Law & Order, Oz, and Sex and the City.
