Nuria Amat (born in 1950) is a Spanish writer and librarian. She writes in both Spanish and Catalan languages. Nuria Amat won the important Ramon Llull Novel Award in 2011.

Nuria Amat's Early Life and Education

Nuria Amat was born in Barcelona, Spain, in 1950. She studied Spanish language and literature at university. Later, she earned a special degree in information science. This helped her become a librarian.

Nuria Amat's Career as a Writer

Nuria Amat worked as a librarian. She also taught about libraries at the University of Barcelona. She wrote many studies about how libraries work.

Her first creative book was a poetry collection. It was called Pan de boda and came out in 1979. After that, Amat wrote many essays, short stories, and novels in Spanish. She was part of the lively writing community in Barcelona during the 1970s and 1980s. She was friends with famous writers like Juan Goytisolo and Carlos Fuentes.

How Nuria Amat Writes Her Books

Nuria Amat's books often have a complex style. She likes to explore how reading and writing work. Her stories sometimes talk about themselves, which is called metafiction.

One of her novels is Todos somos Kafka. This book thinks about old literary traditions. Carlos Fuentes, a famous writer, called it "magnificent." In 2002, Amat won the Premio Ciudad de Barcelona [es] award. She won it for her novel Reina de América. This book is about a Spanish woman writer living during a civil war in Colombia.

Besides writing in Spanish, Nuria Amat also writes in Catalan. She wrote a play called Pat's Room in 1997. She also wrote a novel called Amor i guerra. This book is about the assassination of Leon Trotsky. He was killed by Ramón Mercader, who is distantly related to Amat's mother.

Amor i guerra won the Ramon Llull Novel Award in 2011. Nuria Amat first started writing notes for this novel in both Catalan and Spanish. But she decided to write the whole book in Catalan. Later, she created a Spanish version of the book.
