Oakfield Station is a cool old train station in Oakfield, Maine. It was built way back in 1911 by the Bangor and Aroostook Railroad. This station shows how important Oakfield used to be for trains! Today, it's home to the Oakfield Railroad Museum. The museum is run by the Oakfield Historical Society. This historic building was added to the National Register of Historic Places on June 25, 1987.

What is Oakfield Station?

Oakfield Station sits right next to the old train tracks. These tracks once belonged to the Bangor and Aroostook Railroad. You can find it at the end of Station Street. It's a single-story building made of wood. It has a special roof shape called a gable-on-hip roof. You can see half-round windows and exposed wood beams in the roof's ends.

Cool Features of the Building

The front of the station faces where the trains used to run. It has a part that sticks out a bit, with a small roof and a round window. This part has two regular windows and narrow windows on its sides. There are also two doors and more windows nearby. The main roof has wide edges supported by long, thin brackets. A small covered walkway connects the main building to a tool shed. Inside, the station has three rooms. Two of these rooms still have their original metal wall panels!

History of the Station

The Bangor and Aroostook Railroad built this station in 1911. It was a busy place where people would catch trains. Passenger train service stopped on this line in 1961. The station was moved about 100 meters (about 100 yards) in 1941. This move was done to make changes to a nearby road crossing. In 1986, the building was given to the Oakfield Historical Society. They worked hard to fix it up and turn it into a museum.
