Objectspace is a special art gallery in Auckland, New Zealand. It first opened its doors in 2004. This gallery is all about showing amazing works in craft, applied arts, and design. It's a place where you can see how people create beautiful and useful things.
How Objectspace Works
Objectspace is run by a group called the Objectspace charitable trust. This means it's a non-profit organization that aims to help the community. The gallery gets support from Creative New Zealand, which helps artists and art groups in New Zealand. It also gets help from a group called The Friends of Objectspace.
The first person to lead the gallery was Philip Clarke, who was the director from 2004 to 2015. Since 2015, Kim Paton has been the director. She helps decide what exhibitions to show and how the gallery runs.
Master of Craft Series
Objectspace has a special exhibition series called the "Master of Craft." This series celebrates talented New Zealand artists. These artists have become truly skilled in their chosen craft over many years. They create art that shows deep understanding and lots of practice.
Each "Master of Craft" exhibition focuses on one artist. It also comes with a special book about their work. Some of the artists who have been part of this series include:
- Peter Haythornthwaite, an industrial designer (in 2018)
- Mark Cleverley, a graphic designer (in 2014)
- Nanette Cameron, an interior designer (in 2013)
- Kobi Bosshard, a jeweller (in 2012)
- Richard Parker, a potter (in 2011)
Moving to a New Home in 2017
In 2017, Objectspace moved to a new, bigger location. The new gallery is at 13 Rose Road in Ponsonby, Auckland. This move gave the gallery more space to show off its amazing exhibitions.
The gallery was able to move because it received more funding from Creative New Zealand. This extra support also meant Objectspace could show more types of art. Besides craft and applied art, they started including architecture and design.
The new gallery opened on July 27, 2017. The first exhibitions there included:
- An art piece by Warwick Freeman in the new courtyard.
- A show about a team-up between a typographer (someone who designs fonts) named Kris Sowersby and a design company called Alt Group.
- FutureIslands, which was a new version of New Zealand's display from the 2016 Venice Biennale of Architecture.
