An octobass is a super-sized musical instrument. It's like a giant double bass with three strings. Musicians play it with a bow, just like a regular double bass. It makes the deepest sounds of any string instrument in the world!

There are only about seven octobasses known to exist, and most of them are in museums. The only one that is fully working and used regularly is with the Montreal Symphony Orchestra. This makes them the only orchestra in the world to have an octobass!

What is an Octobass?

The octobass is a very rare and special instrument. It's part of the violin family, but it's much, much bigger than a violin or even a cello. It's so big that a musician usually needs to stand on a small platform to play it.

How it's Played

Because of its huge size, playing the octobass is a bit different from other string instruments. It has a special system of levers and pedals. These help the musician press down on the strings. Imagine trying to reach all the way down a giant neck! The levers and pedals make it easier to play the notes.

History of the Octobass

The octobass was invented in 1850 by a French instrument maker named Jean-Baptiste Vuillaume. He wanted to create an instrument that could play even lower notes than any other. He built three octobasses during his lifetime.

Where are They Now?

Today, the few octobasses that exist are very valuable.

  • One is in the Musée de la Musique in Paris, France.
  • Another is at the Musical Instrument Museum in Phoenix, Arizona, USA.
  • The most famous one is owned by the Montreal Symphony Orchestra in Canada. This one was built in 1930 and is still used for concerts.

Why is it so Rare?

The octobass is rare for a few reasons:

  • Size: It's incredibly large, making it hard to move and store.
  • Cost: Building such a unique and massive instrument is very expensive.
  • Need: Most music pieces don't require notes as low as the octobass can play. So, orchestras don't often need one.

Despite its rarity, the octobass is an amazing example of musical invention. It shows how people have always tried to push the boundaries of sound!
