October Films, Inc. was an important American company that made and distributed movies. It was started in 1991 by Bingham Ray and Jeff Lipsky. Their first goal was to help distribute the 1990 movie Life Is Sweet.
October Films was known for supporting "independent films." These are movies made outside of the big Hollywood studios. They often have unique stories and are made with smaller budgets.
Over time, October Films went through several changes. In 1997, a large movie company called Universal Studios bought most of October Films. Then, in 1999, Universal sold its share to Barry Diller. He changed the company's name to USA Films. USA Films then joined with other film companies like Interscope Communications and Gramercy Pictures. Later, in 2002, USA Films merged with another company called Good Machine to create a new company called Focus Features.
