Odesza (also known as ODESZA) is an American electronic music group. It is made up of two members: Harrison Mills and Clayton Knight. They are from Seattle. The group started in 2012. This was just before Mills and Knight finished their studies at Western Washington University.

Their first album, Summer's Gone, came out in 2012. It became very popular in the electronic music world. After Summer's Gone, Odesza released their first EP (Extended Play) called My Friends Never Die in 2013. An EP is like a mini-album with fewer songs. Their second full album, In Return, was released in 2014. Later, on September 18, 2015, they released In Return (Deluxe Edition). This special version of the album had three new live songs. These songs included a horn section, instrumental music, and a new song called “Light” with Little Dragon.

History of Odesza

Harrison Mills and Clayton Knight first met in college. They were both students at Western Washington University. They studied different subjects. Clayton Knight studied physics and math. Harrison Mills studied graphic design. They did not start making music together until their last year of college in 2012.

As a child, Clayton Knight learned to play the piano. He later learned to play the guitar too. The duo quickly released their first album, Summer's Gone, on September 5, 2012. Odesza played their very first live show on November 9, 2012. They performed in Bellingham, Washington. Soon after, their songs were played over 1 million times on Soundcloud.

Their first EP, My Friends Never Die, came out a year later. Odesza was chosen to open for Pretty Lights on his "Analog Future Tour" in late 2013. Their first big tour as the main act started on March 12, 2014. By October 1, 2014, Odesza's songs had been played over 30 million times on Soundcloud. Their "In Return North American tour" sold out 28 shows by October 17, 2014.

Many of Odesza's songs have been very popular online. Twenty-four of their songs have reached #1 on a website called Hype Machine. These songs include "How Did I Get Here", "Memories That You Call", "Lights", and "All We Need (Autograf Remix)".

Odesza's first festival performance was at the Sasquatch! Music Festival in George, Washington. After that, they played at more than 20 other music festivals. Some of these famous festivals include:

  • Coachella
  • SXSW
  • Hangout Festival
  • Lightning In A Bottle

How Odesza Got Its Name

The name Odesza comes from the Hungarian spelling for the city of Odessa in Ukraine. The band's name has a special meaning for Harrison Mills. It comes from the name of his uncle's ship, which sank. Only his uncle and one other person on the ship survived.

The spelling "Odessa" was already being used by another band. So, Harrison and Clayton decided to use the Hungarian spelling instead. They changed the "ss" to "sz" to make it Odesza.

Individual Nicknames

Harrison Mills also has his own music name, Catacombkid. Clayton Knight's music name is Beaches Beaches.

When asked about his nickname, Harrison Mills said he liked a song called 'Catacomb Kids'. He thought it sounded cool. Clayton Knight said he got his nickname when he was making music in his room one day.
