Odo II (born in 1118 – died in 1162) was an important ruler in France. He was the Duke of Burgundy from 1143 until his death. His time as Duke lasted for 19 years.
Who Was Odo II?
Odo II was a powerful leader in medieval France. He inherited the title of Duke from his father. As Duke, he was in charge of a large area called Burgundy. This region is in what is now modern-day France.
Dukes in Odo's time were like kings of their own smaller lands. They made laws and led their people. They also had to protect their lands from enemies.
His Family Life
Odo II was the oldest son of Hugh II, Duke of Burgundy. His mother was Matilda of Mayenne. She was the daughter of Gauthier, who was the Count of Mayenne.
Odo married a woman named Marie. She was the daughter of Theobald II, Count of Champagne. Marie's mother was Matilda of Carinthia.
Odo and Marie had three children together:
- Alix (1146–1192): She married a lord named Archambaud in 1164.
- Hugh III, Duke of Burgundy: He became the next Duke of Burgundy after Odo.
- Mahaut (died 1202): She married Robert IV, Count of Auvergne.
After Odo II
Odo II passed away in 1162. His son, Hugh III, took over as the new Duke of Burgundy. This was a common way for power to be passed down in noble families during that time.
