Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The Old Carleton County Court House is a historic building in Upper Woodstock, New Brunswick, Canada. It was built way back in 1833. This old courthouse has a long and interesting story.

A Look Back in Time

The Old Carleton County Court House was finished in 1833. It served as an important place for legal matters in the area for many years. When a newer courthouse was built in 1911, this old building was no longer needed for court cases.

After its time as a courthouse, the building was used as a horse barn. This continued for many years, until 1960. That year, the Carleton County Historical Society bought the building. They wanted to protect its history. In 1977, the building was officially recognized as a protected heritage site. This means it is an important part of the area's history.

Visiting the Old Courthouse

Today, the Old Carleton County Court House is open for people to visit. It is a great place to learn about local history. You can visit from July 1 to August 31, Monday to Saturday, between 11 AM and 7 PM. At other times of the year, you can arrange a visit by making an appointment.

The courthouse also hosts special events. One popular event is the Victorian Christmas Concert. This concert takes place on the last weekend in November. It is a fun way to experience the building's historic charm.

Keeping the Building Strong

Old buildings need care to stay in good shape. In December 2012, important work began on the roof of the courthouse. This renovation helps to protect the building from weather. It ensures the Old Carleton County Court House will be around for many more years.
