About This Historic Building

This special building in Madison, Wisconsin, has played an important role in science. It was once the main home for a group of scientists who studied wood. This group was called the Forest Products Laboratory.

A Place for Wood Research

The Forest Products Laboratory is part of the United States Forest Service. This service helps manage and protect our nation's forests. The laboratory's job was to research wood. They studied how wood could be used best. They also looked at ways to make wood products stronger. This building was their headquarters until 1932.

A New Home for Science

In 1932, the Forest Products Laboratory moved. It went to a new, larger building in Madison. That building is on Gifford Pinchot Drive. After the lab moved, this old building found a new purpose. Today, it is part of the University of Wisconsin–Madison. It serves as the Materials Science & Engineering Building. Here, students learn about different materials, including wood.

A Recognized Landmark

Because of its important history, this building is a recognized landmark. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1985. This register lists places that are important to American history. It was also added to the State Register of Historic Places in 1989. This shows its value to Wisconsin's history.
