A cup of Oliang, a popular Thai iced coffee, in Ayutthaya Province.

Oliang is a super popular iced coffee drink from Thailand. You might also hear it called Thai iced coffee. It's made from special coffee beans called Robusta. But it's not just coffee! Oliang also has brown sugar and other tasty things. These can include grains and seeds like cardamom, corn, soybeans, rice, and sesame seeds. This mix gives Oliang its unique coffee smell and a smoky taste.

Where Oliang Comes From

The name "Oliang" has a cool story! It comes from the Teochew Chinese language. In Teochew, "o͘-liâng" means "black and iced." This name perfectly describes the dark, cold coffee drink. Most of the Chinese people living in Thailand speak the Teochew language.

How Oliang is Made

Oliang is usually made using a special Thai coffee filter. This filter is called a tungdtom (Thai: ถุงต้ม). It looks like a sock made of cotton cloth, attached to a metal ring with a handle. This tool is also used to make Thai tea.

To make Oliang:

  • First, the Oliang coffee mix goes into the cotton bag.
  • Then, boiling water is poured through the bag into a pitcher.
  • The bag is left to steep for about 10 minutes. This makes the coffee very strong.

Sometimes, Oliang is served with condensed milk. Other times, you might get a small pitcher of evaporated milk and some simple syrup. This lets you sweeten your Oliang just the way you like it!

Different Kinds of Oliang

You can enjoy Oliang in a few different ways:

  • Black coffee with ice is called oliang (โอเลี้ยง).
  • Black coffee with condensed milk is called kopi (โกปี๊).
  • Black coffee with ice and fresh milk is called oliang yok lor (โอเลี้ยงยกล้อ).
  • Black coffee with condensed milk, ice, and fresh milk is called iced coffee (กาแฟเย็น; kafae yen).
