What is On the Run About?
This exciting story begins with a boy named Ben. His cousins, who he lives with, become unwell. This means Ben has to spend his summer holidays with his father and his father's new partner in London.
Ben's London Adventure
Ben's father and stepmother-to-be are very busy. They don't have much free time to spend with him. So, Ben decides to explore the area around their house. He finds a way to walk along the garden walls that connect all the houses on his street. It sounds like a fun way to see the neighborhood!
A Secret Meeting
During his exploration, Ben reaches a wall covered in sharp, jagged glass. He accidentally falls into the garden on the other side. There, he meets a boy named Thomas. Thomas is from a place called Tiga Island. He is living in London because his father, Chief Okapi, is in exile there.
The Escape Plan
Ben soon discovers a secret plan to take Thomas away against his will. To protect Thomas, Ben decides they must run away. Thomas's friend, Lil, joins them on their daring escape. Together, these three children embark on an unforgettable journey.
Where Did Nina Bawden Get Her Ideas?
Nina Bawden, the author, shared some interesting facts about her book. She said that On the Run is set in two real places.
London and Herne Bay
The first main setting is London, a big city in England. The second place is Herne Bay, a seaside town located on the coast of Kent. Nina Bawden's own parents lived in Herne Bay, which might have inspired her to include it in the story.
Escaping the Grown-Up World
Nina Bawden also mentioned what she hoped to achieve with the novel. She wanted to write about children who actually get to escape, even if just for a little while, from the world of adults. This idea of children taking charge of their own adventure is a big part of what makes On the Run so appealing.
