One The Elephant is a tall building in Elephant and Castle, a busy area in London, England. It is mainly a place where people live. This building is a 37-storey tower, which means it has 37 floors. It stands about 124 meters (407 feet) high.

Next to the main tower, there is a smaller four-storey building. This part also has apartments and some shops. The whole building is very close to the Elephant and Castle tube station. This is a London Underground station in Zone 1, making it easy to travel around London.

Building One The Elephant

Building this large structure took some time. The plans for One The Elephant were approved in 2012. This approval is called "planning consent." It means the city gave permission for the building to be constructed.

Construction started in 2013. The Mayor of London at that time, Boris Johnson, even visited the site. The building was finished in the summer of 2016.

What's Inside the Building?

One The Elephant has a total of 284 apartments. These homes come in different sizes. You can find studio apartments, which are like one big room. There are also apartments with one, two, or three bedrooms.

Most of these apartments, 254 of them, are in the tall tower. The remaining 30 apartments are in the smaller four-storey building next door.

Helping the Community

When big buildings like One The Elephant are built, developers sometimes contribute to the local area. In this case, the company that built One The Elephant, Lendlease, made a payment of £3 million. This money helped to build a new sports and leisure center nearby. This new center is called The Castle Centre.

In total, the local council, Southwark Council, received £22 million from this development. This money came from the payment for the leisure center, the sale of the land, and other agreements. This amount was more than enough to cover the £20 million cost of the new leisure center for the community.

Awards and Recognition

One The Elephant has received special recognition for its design. In 2016, it won an award called Best Residential High-rise Architecture London. This award was given at the International Property Awards.

The building was also considered for an even bigger award. It was shortlisted for the Best Residential High-rise Architecture UK award. This shows that its design is considered excellent across the United Kingdom.
