Oneida Nation School System facts for kids
The Oneida Nation School System is a special school for students from kindergarten through 12th grade (K-12). It is located in Oneida, Wisconsin. This school is run by the Oneida Nation and works with the Bureau of Indian Education (BIE).
The school has two main parts. There is a large elementary school building with 38 classrooms, covering about 162,000 square feet (15,000 square meters). There is also a separate building for the high school. In 2001, the high school had just over 100 students.
School History
The Oneida Nation School System opened its doors in the mid-1990s. The elementary school welcomed its first students in 1994. The high school opened the following year, in 1995. When the school first started, it had a small team of about eight to ten staff members.
In January 2007, the leaders of the Oneida Nation and the school noticed some challenges with student behavior. To help fix this, they decided to close the school for one week. During this time, they worked together to update the school's rules. This helped to bring back good discipline and a positive learning environment.
Sports and Athletics
Around 2008, it was sometimes hard for the school's sports teams to have enough players. This was because the high school had a smaller number of students. Because of this, some sports teams might not have been able to play in certain years.
However, in 2008, the high school started a new and exciting sport: lacrosse! They created a junior varsity team, which means it was a team for younger or less experienced players. This allowed more students to get involved in competitive sports.
