Opuntia matudae, often called xoconostle, is a unique type of cactus that grows naturally in Mexico. For a while, some scientists thought it might be the same as another cactus called Opuntia hyptiacantha. However, in 2019, a study looking at the genes of these plants showed that they are actually different species.

About the Xoconostle Cactus
The xoconostle cactus is known for its fruit. This fruit is very important in Mexico, both as a traditional medicine and as a food. While there are other cacti called 'xoconostle', Opuntia matudae is the most important one for people to use and sell.
How People Use Xoconostle
People in Mexico have used the fruit of the xoconostle cactus for a long time. It is often eaten as part of traditional medicine. It is also used in cooking.
Xoconostle as Food and Medicine
The xoconostle fruit is different from the more common cactus fruit called tunas, which comes from the Opuntia ficus-indica cactus. Xoconostle fruit is not as sweet as tunas. It has a plain greenish color. Its taste is quite sour or acidic because it contains citric acid.
Inside the xoconostle fruit, you will find many green seeds. The center part of the fruit, where the seeds are, has a red color. This red color comes from special natural pigments called betalains, which are also antioxidants. Antioxidants are good for your body.
