Oranienburg facts for kids
Oranienburg is a town in Germany. It has about 45,000 people living there. The town is located just a few kilometers north of Berlin.
Oranienburg was first settled by Slavic people. They probably called the area "Bochzowe." In the 12th century, Germanic settlers arrived. They kept the original name for the place.
Because of its important location, a castle was built in the 13th century. The town was first mentioned in writing in 1216 as "Bothzowe." It was given city rights in 1232. The old name, Bothzowe, is still seen today in the name Bötzow.
In 1483, the castle became less important. A new residence was built there by Joachim II Hector, Elector of Brandenburg. An Elector was a powerful prince who helped choose the Holy Roman Emperor. Joachim II used this new residence for hunting.
During the Thirty Years' War, Bötzow was badly damaged. It was attacked and burned down.
