The Order of Military Merit (which in Spanish is called Orden del Mérito de Militar) is a special award given to people who serve in the Military of the Dominican Republic. It was created a long time ago, on November 15, 1930. This award celebrates soldiers, sailors, and air force members who show amazing service and courage.

What is the Order of Military Merit?

This special honor is given to members of the Dominican Republic's military. It recognizes their extraordinary service and bravery. The motto of the order is Honour, Virtue, Valor, which means showing respect, doing what is right, and being brave.

Different Types of Awards

The Order of Military Merit has three main types, called "divisions." Each division is shown with a different colored ribbon:

  • Red Ribbon: This is for soldiers who have shown bravery and excellent service during combat or war.
  • Blue Ribbon: This ribbon is given for long and loyal service to the military.
  • White Ribbon: This is for other important services that help the military.

Award Classes for Ranks

Within each of these divisions, the award is given in one of four different classes. These classes depend on the military rank of the person receiving the award:

  • First Class: Given to General Officers, who are very high-ranking leaders.
  • Second Class: Awarded to Superior Officers, who are also important leaders.
  • Third Class: For Junior Officers, who are newer leaders in the military.
  • Fourth Class: Given to Non-Commissioned Officers, who are experienced leaders but not officers.

Who Has Received This Award?

Many brave individuals have been honored with the Order of Military Merit. Some of the notable recipients include:

  • James Carson Breckinridge
  • James T. Moore (USMC)
  • Julian C. Smith
  • Allen H. Turnage
  • Gregon A. Williams
  • William A. Worton

What Does M.M. Mean?

When someone receives the Order of Military Merit, they can add the letters M. M. after their full name. These letters stand for Mérito Militar, which is Spanish for "Military Merit." You will see these letters on official papers and documents to show that the person has earned this special honor.
