Order of the Dove facts for kids
The Order of the Dove (in Spanish, Orden de la Paloma) was a special group of knights. It was created by King Juan I of Castile in 1379. This order was meant to protect the Catholic faith and the Kingdom of Castile. It was also called the Order of the Pigeon, because the Spanish word paloma means both dove and pigeon.
History of the Dove Order
The Order of the Dove did not last very long. It was started in 1379 but ended just one year later. Even though it was very short-lived, people remembered it for its huge parties. These parties often included eating lots of pigeon meat.
Why the Order Ended
The large feasts and the order's name, which came from pigeons, actually led to its downfall. The members spent too much time feasting on pigeons. This focus on parties and food made the order lose its original purpose.
Insignia of the Order
The special symbol of the Order of the Dove was a necklace. This necklace had a chain and a pigeon with open wings. This pigeon was a key part of the order's identity.
