Nigerian National Honours are special awards given to people in Nigeria. These awards celebrate Nigerians and friends of Nigeria who have done great things for the country. They were first created in 1964 to say "thank you" to those who helped make Nigeria better.
What are Nigerian National Honours?
Nigerian National Honours are important awards. They are given out every year to people who have helped Nigeria grow and become a better place. These awards were started on October 1, 1963, and officially set up by a law in 1964.
Types of Honours
There are different levels of Nigerian National Honours. They are listed from the most important to the least important:
- Grand Commander of the Order of the Federal Republic (GCFR)
- Grand Commander of the Order of the Niger (GCON)
- Commander of the Order of the Federal Republic (CFR)
- Commander of the Order of the Niger (CON)
- Officer of the Order of the Federal Republic (OFR)
- Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON)
- Member of the Order of the Federal Republic (MFR)
- Member of the Order of the Niger (MON)
Who Receives These Awards?
The highest awards, the GCFR and GCON, are usually given to very important leaders. For example, former Presidents of Nigeria often receive the GCFR. Former Vice Presidents usually get the GCON.
Other important people who receive these top awards include former military leaders of Nigeria. The GCON is also often given to the Chief Justice of Nigeria and the President of the Nigerian Senate when they start their jobs. Judges of the Supreme Court of Nigeria usually receive the CON award.
