Oreste Sindici (born May 31, 1828 – died January 12, 1904) was a talented musician and composer. He was born in Italy but became a citizen of Colombia. He is most famous for writing the music for the Colombian national anthem in 1887.

Early Life and Musical Training

Oreste Sindici was born in a town called Ceccano in Italy. He loved music from a young age. He studied music at the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia in Rome. This was a very important music school.

Moving to Colombia

In 1863, Oreste Sindici traveled to Bogotá, Colombia. He came as a singer with an opera company. An opera company is a group of people who perform operas. He decided to stay in Colombia. He worked there as a musician for the rest of his life.

Composing the National Anthem

In 1887, a very important person named Rafael Núñez asked Oreste Sindici for help. Rafael Núñez was the President of Colombia. He had written a poem and wanted music for it. Oreste Sindici composed the music for this poem.

The new song was first performed on November 11, 1887. This date was special because it celebrated the independence of Cartagena de Indias. The song became very popular. In 1920, the Colombian government officially made it the national anthem.

Later Life and Legacy

Oreste Sindici passed away in Bogotá on January 12, 1904. He was honored by the Colombian government in 1937. His music for the national anthem is still sung today. It is a very important part of Colombia's history and culture.
