Orfeo Tamburi (1910–1994) was a talented Italian artist. He was known for his beautiful paintings and for designing the sets for plays and movies. He lived a long life, creating art and traveling the world.

Who Was Orfeo Tamburi?

Orfeo Tamburi was born in a town called Jesi, Italy, in 1910. He finished school at a technical institute in 1926. He loved art and wanted to learn more.

Early Life and Studies

In 1928, Orfeo received a special grant, like a scholarship, to study art in Rome. He went to the Accademia di Belle Arti di Roma, which is a famous art academy. There, he met other creative people like Ennio Flaiano and Vincenzo Cardarelli.

Soon after, he moved to Paris, France. Paris was a very important city for artists. Orfeo was greatly inspired by the famous painter Cezanne, who taught him new ways to see and paint the world. Orfeo stayed in Paris even during World War II.

Working as a Scenic Designer

Besides painting, Orfeo Tamburi was also a skilled scenic designer. This means he created the backgrounds and props for plays and films. In 1941, he designed the sets and characters for a play called La sacra rappresentazione di Abrham e Isaac.

Travels and Recognition

After the war ended, Orfeo traveled a lot around Europe. He explored different places and found new inspiration for his art.

In the 1960s, he visited the United States. He even got a special job, called a commission, to take pictures of American cities for a magazine called Fortune.

In 1964, Orfeo Tamburi gave many of his artworks to the Pinacoteca Civica di Jesi. This is a public art gallery in his hometown. The town was so proud of him that they even started an award named after his mother.

Orfeo received many honors for his work. In 1971, the Italian president gave him a gold medal for his contributions to culture. In 1975, he won another important award called the Premio Internazionale “Città Eterna” in Rome.

Orfeo Tamburi passed away in 1994 in Ermont, France. He left behind a wonderful collection of paintings and designs that continue to inspire people today.
