Orthoceras novae-zeelandiae, also known as the New Zealand horned orchid, is a special type of orchid that grows naturally in New Zealand.

What is the New Zealand Horned Orchid?

The New Zealand horned orchid is a plant that grows from the ground. It is a perennial plant, which means it lives for more than two years. This orchid also has special underground storage parts called tubers. These tubers help the plant survive and store food.

The orchid blooms, or flowers, during the summer months in New Zealand. You can see its flowers from December to March.

How was this Orchid Named?

This unique orchid was first officially described in 1989. Three botanists, who are scientists who study plants, gave it its scientific name. Their names were Mark Alwin Clements, David L. Jones, and Brian Molloy. When scientists "describe" a plant, they write down all its features so other scientists can identify it.

Where Does the Horned Orchid Grow?

The New Zealand horned orchid can be found on both the North Island and the South Island of New Zealand. It grows in many different places, from areas near the coast all the way up to mountain environments. You can find it in places up to 800 meters (about 2,600 feet) above sea level.
