Orton Park is a beautiful green space located in Madison, Wisconsin. It's a popular spot where people can relax and enjoy being outdoors. This park has an interesting history, and it's even listed on the National Register of Historic Places!

A Look Back: Orton Park's History

Before it became the park we know today, this land had a very different purpose. It was once used as a public cemetery. In 1877, all the graves located at this site were carefully moved to another place, Forest Hill Cemetery.

After the graves were moved, the area was officially opened as a park in 1887. It was named Orton Park in honor of Harlow S. Orton. He was an important person in Wisconsin's history, serving as a judge and a politician. The park is also part of a larger area called the Orton Park Historic District, which means it's recognized for its special historical importance.
