The Otley Road drill hall, also known as Wellington House, is a building in Skipton, North Yorkshire, England. It used to be a place where soldiers trained and prepared for military duties.

History of the Drill Hall

Building a Training Base

The Otley Road drill hall was built in 1892. It was designed to be the main base for the 3rd Volunteer Battalion of The Duke of Wellington's Regiment. A "volunteer battalion" was a group of soldiers who trained in their spare time, ready to serve if needed.

Serving in World Wars

Over time, this unit changed its name. By 1908, it became the 6th Battalion, The Duke of Wellington's Regiment. When World War I began in August 1914, the soldiers of this battalion gathered at the drill hall. From there, they were sent to fight on the Western Front.

After World War II, the battalion changed again. It became the 673rd Light Anti-Aircraft Regiment, part of the Royal Artillery. This unit was responsible for defending against enemy aircraft.

Changes and New Uses

In 1955, this regiment joined with another unit. Later, in 1961, it became the West Riding Battalion, The Duke of Wellington's Regiment. This new unit was based at the St Paul's Street drill hall in Huddersfield.

In 1967, the military made some changes and reduced its forces. Because of these "defence cutbacks," the Otley Road drill hall was no longer needed by the army. It was empty for many years. Eventually, the building was bought and changed into offices for an architectural company.
