Early Life and Training
Ottone Rosai studied art at the Florence Academy of Fine Arts. He graduated in 1912. During this time, he became friends with a group of artists called the Futurists. These artists were interested in speed, technology, and the future.
He was especially close with another painter named Ardengo Soffici. Rosai and Soffici even had an art show together in Rome in 1914. This was an important step in his early career.
Developing His Style
After World War I, Rosai returned to Florence. He started to paint in a style known as the "return to order." This meant artists went back to more traditional ways of painting, focusing on clear shapes and simple forms. He studied the works of older Italian painters to learn from them.
In 1920, Rosai had his first solo art show in Florence. He also started writing for an art magazine called Il Selvaggio in 1926. In 1929, he showed his work at a big exhibition in Milan called the Seconda Mostra del Novecento Italiano. This show featured modern Italian art.
Later Career and Recognition
Rosai's art became more widely known. In 1930, he had another solo show in Milan. He also began to show his paintings at the famous Venice Biennale, a large international art exhibition. His first time there was in 1932.
In 1942, Rosai started teaching art at the Florence Academy of Fine Arts. This allowed him to share his knowledge with new artists. The Venice Biennale honored him with a large show of his work in 1956. This was a year before he passed away in Ivrea, Italy, in 1957.
