The Outlet Mound is a special kind of ancient burial site. It's shaped like a cone, which means it's round at the bottom and gets narrower towards the top. You can find it in Monona, Wisconsin, right where water flows out of Lake Monona. This important historical spot was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2003, which means it's officially recognized as a place worth protecting.
History of the Outlet Mound
The Outlet Mound is very important because it's the only one left from a much larger group. Long ago, there were 19 different mounds here. They came in various shapes: some were conical (like a cone), some were oval, and others were long and linear.
This specific Outlet Mound was the biggest of them all. It measured about 60 feet (18 meters) around and stood about 7 feet (2 meters) tall.
Who Built the Mounds?
These mounds were built by Native American people a very long time ago. They used them as burial grounds, which are places where people are buried.
Scientists used a method called "radio-carbon dating" on one of the other mounds that was destroyed. This method helps them figure out how old something is. They found that one mound was built around 50 BC (50 years before the year 0). This means the Outlet Mound probably comes from the same time period.
Saving the Mound
Many of the original mounds were lost over time. However, in 1944, the Outlet Mound was saved from being destroyed. It was then given to the City of Monona to protect it for future generations.
