Ove Verner Hansen (born July 20, 1932 – died February 20, 2016) was a talented Danish opera singer and actor. Many people remember him for playing a character called "Bøffen" in the popular Olsen-banden movies. "Bøffen" means "the steak" and he was a big, strong henchman.
Ove Verner Hansen appeared in 16 of these movies. He often played a large, slow-moving bad guy. His character was known for lifting the main character, Egon Olsen, over his head!
About Ove Verner Hansen
Ove Verner Hansen had many different jobs before he became famous. He worked as an office clerk, a sailor, and even a lumberjack. He was also a miner and an ambulance driver.
He was born with a very deep and powerful voice. Because of this, he started singing professionally. In 1958, he joined the Danish National Radio Choir. Just two years later, in 1960, he became part of the famous Royal Danish Opera Chorus. For many years, he was a main singer at the Royal Danish Opera. He was known for his funny opera roles, called a "basso buffo."
From Opera to Movies
Ove Verner Hansen's acting skills and funny personality were noticed by movie director Erik Balling. Erik Balling chose him to play the villain "Bøffen" in the movies about the Olsen Gang. These movies were very popular in Denmark and Norway.
A Talented Cook
Besides acting and singing, Ove Verner Hansen was also a great cook! He wrote several cookbooks. One of his books was called Mandemad (which means "Man Food"). Another was a cookbook about fish. He even appeared on television sometimes as a celebrity chef.
Ove Verner Hansen passed away on February 20, 2016, when he was 83 years old.
