Oveco Núñez facts for kids
Oveco Núñez was an important bishop in Spain a long time ago. He was the Bishop of León from 927 until he died in 951. He lived during the time of King Ramiro II (who ruled from 931 to 951). Oveco was a loyal friend and supporter of King Ramiro II.
Sometimes, people get Oveco Núñez mixed up with another bishop named Oveco of Oviedo, who lived at the same time. We don't know much about where Oveco Núñez came from. He might have been part of a powerful family called the Vela family. He was likely the brother of a count named Bermudo Núñez. This would make him the uncle of Fernando Bermúdez de Cea, who later inherited some of Oveco's property.
Oveco's Early Life and Work
Oveco Núñez was involved in church activities from a young age. In 920, he was a deacon, which is a church official.
Around the year 937, Oveco led an important trip with his brother Bermudo. They went to the area around Salamanca in Spain. Their goal was to help create new villages and build new churches. They worked with the new bishop, Dulcidio II, to make these new places official. This process of settling new areas was called repoblación.
Later, in 953, King Ordoño III gave all the villages and churches that Oveco and his group had started to the Diocese of León. This meant these places would be under the care of the church in León. Oveco also started a monastery in a place called Vega. After he died, this monastery went to his nephew, Fernando.
