How do they work?

PCBs work by providing a sturdy base for electronic parts and connecting them with electrical pathways. When you turn on an electronic device, electricity travels along these copper paths to the different components. Where do we find them?

You can find PCBs in almost every electronic device around you! They are inside your smartphone, laptop, tablet, and television. Why were they used?

Because PCBs are stable and don't conduct electricity well, they were widely used in many industrial products. For example, they were used in electrical equipment like transformers and capacitors to prevent overheating. They were also found in paints, plastics, sealants, and even some types of carbonless copy paper. Their useful properties made them popular for many years.

Why are they a problem?

Even though PCBs were useful, scientists later discovered that they can be harmful. Because they don't break down easily, they can stay in the environment for a very long time. They can get into soil, water, and air. Animals and people can be exposed to them, and they can build up in living things over time. Due to these concerns, the production of PCBs was stopped in many countries, including the United States, in the late 1970s. Efforts are now made to clean up areas where PCBs were released.
