The PS George Rennie was a steel-hulled ship built in 1885. It started as a paddle steamer, which means it used large wheels on its sides to move through the water. This ship was built in Middlesex, England.

Later, in 1896, a company called Howard Smith and Company bought the George Rennie. They changed it into a lighter. A lighter is a type of barge used to carry goods, often from larger ships to the shore. The George Rennie was used to transport coal. It carried coal from West Point to Townsville Harbour in Queensland, Australia.

In 1902, the ship was purposely sunk, or scuttled. It was sunk in Picnic Bay, near Magnetic Island, Queensland. The reason it was scuttled was to create a breakwater. A breakwater is a barrier that protects a small jetty (a type of pier) from strong waves. Today, you can still see parts of the George Rennie's remains at low tide from Picnic Bay beach.
