Pablo Pontons (born 1630 – died 1691) was a Spanish painter from the Baroque period. He is thought to have been a student of Pedro de Orrente, and he helped spread Orrente's artistic style.

Life and Art of Pablo Pontons

Pablo Pontons was born in Valencia, Spain. His mother came from Murcia and might have been related to his teacher, Pedro de Orrente. Orrente was the biggest influence on Pontons's art. However, Pontons's early paintings also show hints of the style of another artist, Jerónimo Jacinto de Espinosa.

Early Influences and Style

You can clearly see Orrente's influence in many of Pontons's works. For example, he painted the main altar of the Iglesia de Santa María in Morella. This painting shows King James I of Aragon celebrating the first mass after Morella was conquered. Another painting, now at the Museo de Bellas Artes de Murcia, shows Moses receiving the Ten Commandments. These works really highlight Orrente's impact on Pontons.

Later Works and Legacy

A writer named Antonio Ponz wrote about Pontons's paintings in 1774. Ponz praised paintings that showed the lives of Saints Peter Nolasco and Peter Pascual. These artworks were at a convent in Valencia, but sadly, they seem to be lost today.

Another important painting by Pontons was of Saint Raymond Nonnatus. This work was originally at a convent in El Puig but is now kept at the Museo de Bellas Artes de Valencia. This particular painting shows more of the influence of Espinosa than Orrente, proving that Pontons had his own unique artistic touch.

Pablo Pontons passed away in Valencia in 1691. His work helps us understand the art of the Spanish Baroque period.
