Paddock Farm is a very old and special farm located in Holden, Massachusetts, United States. Its main house was built around 1840. This house is connected to an even older part that dates back to about 1780! It's a great example of a unique style of house. This style is called a "Cape style" house, and it has a special second floor with short windows. Because it's so old and well-preserved, Paddock Farm was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1996. This means it's an important historical site!
About Paddock Farm
Paddock Farm is located in the southern part of Holden. It sits on the west side of Salisbury Street. The property is about 7 acres (or 2.8 hectares) in size.
What's on the Farm?
The farm has several buildings. These include the main house with an attached section. There's also a small barn and a boathouse. The boathouse is located on nearby Dawson Pond. You can also find a chicken coop on the property. Old stone walls, which are very common in New England, surround the farm.
The Main House Design
The main house is a one-and-a-half-story building made of wood. It has a roof that slopes down on two sides. This is called a side-gable roof. There are chimneys at each end of the house. The outside walls are covered with clapboard siding. The house sits on a strong stone foundation.
The front door is in the middle of the house. It has windows on either side. Above the door is a decorative frame. The windows on the first floor are typical 6-over-6 style. This means they have six small panes of glass on the top and six on the bottom. The second floor has small 3-over-3 windows. These windows are set into low walls, which are sometimes called "kneewalls."
History of the House
The main part of the house was built around 1840. It was built by Jonathan Paddock. He lived on the farm for more than 50 years. The attached section of the house is even older. Experts believe it was built around 1780. Jonathan's father, Reuben, likely built this older part.
The house is a great example of old American architecture. It shows a mix of styles like Federal and Greek Revival. It's especially known for its unique "Cape style" design. This design includes the special second-floor kneewall windows. The inside of the house still has many of its original features. For a while, it was divided into apartments. But in the mid-1900s, it was made back into a single-family home.
