Paddy's Market in 2008.

Paddy's Market was a famous old market in Glasgow, Scotland. It was located on Shipbank Lane. This market had been around for nearly 200 years! It moved to different spots in the city over time. In 1849, newspapers in Britain and Australia even wrote about it. They reported that a strong wind once blew clothes away from the market stalls!

Glasgow City Council closed Paddy's Market on May 15, 2009. The council took over the land where the market was from Network Rail. Many of the people who sold things at the market were very upset about this. They even marched to the City Chambers to show their protest.

There was a plan to open the market again in 2016. However, by 2020, the area was still closed off. Signs showed that the land was available for rent.

Why Was It Called Paddy's Market?

The market got its name because many Irish immigrants came to Scotland. This happened in the early 1800s.

Other places also had markets called Paddy's Market. For example, the Liverpool Echo newspaper said a market in Liverpool was called St Patrick’s Bazaar. It also started in the early 1800s for a similar reason.

The name "Paddy's Market" was used in other countries too. It was used in Melbourne, Australia, by 1859. In Wellington, New Zealand, it was used by 1867. The name was also used in Ipswich, England. It is still used today for a market in Sydney, Australia, which started by 1909. The name was also common in New Zealand for many years. A market in Akaroa, New Zealand, was still using the name in 2021.
