The Palacio Valdés Theatre is a beautiful old theatre located in Avilés, a town in Asturias, Northern Spain. It's a very important building for the town's culture and history.

History of the Theatre

The theatre was designed by an architect named Manuel del Busto at the start of the 1900s. He planned it in a style called Neobaroque. This means it looked a bit like buildings from the Baroque period, which was a very fancy and detailed style.

The first step in building the theatre was a special ceremony called the 'First Stone' event. This happened on August 5, 1900. A famous writer named Clarín was there, which made the event even more special!

Building the theatre took a long time, about 20 years. This was mainly because of money problems, which caused the work to stop and start many times. Finally, the theatre was finished and opened in 1920. It was named after another famous writer, Armando Palacio Valdés, who was considered an "adopted son" of Avilés. He even attended the very first show!

The theatre was open from 1920 to 1972. During these years, it hosted all kinds of performances. It was also used as a cinema, showing movies to the townspeople.

However, in 1972, the theatre closed its doors. It stayed closed for 20 years until 1992. After being carefully repaired and made new again, it reopened. Since then, it has had a very successful second life, bringing arts and culture back to Avilés.

On December 28, 1982, the theatre was given a special title. It was declared a "Bien de Interés Cultural" (Cultural Interest Asset). This means it's a very important historical monument that needs to be protected.

Today, the Palacio Valdés Theatre is part of "La red nacional de teatros." This is a network of important theatres across Spain.

Inside the Building

The theatre has a special U-shaped auditorium where the audience sits. It has different floors and private boxes. These boxes are like small, separate viewing areas.

The theatre can hold up to 747 people at one time. This makes it a great place for many people to enjoy shows together.
