A Look Back: The Theatre's Story
The Palacio Valdés Theatre was designed by an architect named Manuel del Busto. He started planning it in the early 1900s. He wanted to build a theatre in a style called Neobaroque. This style uses grand and detailed designs.
Building the Theatre: A Long Journey
The first stone of the theatre was placed on August 5, 1900. A famous writer named Clarín was there for this special event. Building the theatre took a long time. There were money problems, which caused the work to stop many times. Because of these delays, the theatre was not finished until 20 years later.
Grand Opening and Naming
The theatre finally opened its doors in 1920. It was named after another famous writer, Armando Palacio Valdés. He was considered an "adopted son" of Avilés. He even attended the very first show at the theatre.
Years of Shows and Reopening
The theatre was busy from 1920 to 1972. It hosted all kinds of performances, from plays to concerts. It was also used as a cinema to show movies. In 1972, the theatre closed its doors. It stayed closed for 20 years. Then, it was carefully restored and reopened in 1992. Since then, it has been very successful.
A Protected Landmark
On December 28, 1982, the theatre was given a special title. It was declared a "Bien de Interés Cultural" (Asset of Cultural Interest). This means it's an important historical monument that needs to be protected. Today, the Palacio Valdés Theatre is part of "La red nacional de teatros." This is a national network of theatres in Spain.
Inside the Theatre
The theatre has a special U-shaped auditorium. This is where the audience sits to watch the shows. There are different floors and private boxes for people to enjoy the performances. The theatre can hold up to 747 people at one time.
