How it Started
A person named Julien Spiess started Palais des Thés in 1986. He wanted to make tea more popular and help people in Western countries learn about its culture and how to enjoy it. The very first shop opened in a part of Paris called the 6th arrondissement.
Palais des Thés Shops Around the World
Most Palais des Thés shops have three main areas. One area is like a "tea wall" where you can find over 100 different teas sold by weight. Another part is for gifts. The third area is for tea accessories, such as teapots, cups, and tea strainers.
In 1991, Palais des Thés opened its first shop outside France, in Tokyo, Japan. Later, new shops opened in Brussels, Belgium (in 2001 and 2007), and Oslo, Norway (in 2006 and 2007). They also opened stores in Dublin, Ireland (2008), Tel-Aviv, Israel (2010), Copenhagen, Denmark (2023), and Moscow, Russia (2023). However, the shops in Dublin and Tokyo are now closed.
In 2011, Aurelie Pasquet and Cyrille Bessiere helped bring Palais des Thés to the USA. In March 2016, they opened a special place called "L'Appartement" in New York City. At L'Appartement, people who love tea can take classes and try more than 150 different kinds of tea.
