The Quirinal Palace (known in Italian as the Palazzo del Quirinale or simply Quirinale) is a very important historical building in Rome, Italy. It is the official home of the President of the Italian Republic. Think of it like the White House for Italy's president!
The palace sits on the Quirinal Hill, which is the tallest of the famous seven hills of Rome. Many important people have lived here over the centuries. This includes thirty popes, four kings, and now eleven presidents of Italy.

History of the Quirinal Palace
The area where the palace stands has been used since ancient Roman times. The Quirinal Hill is the highest hill in Rome.
Building the Palace
Construction of the palace began in 1573. Pope Gregory XIII started the project. It was built on the Via del Quirinale and faces the Piazza del Quirinale.
Later, Pope Paul V asked for the main parts of the palace to be finished. The palace was completed in 1583.
From Popes to Presidents
For many years, the Quirinal Palace was a home for the Popes. They lived there until 1870.
In 1871, the palace became the official royal residence for the Kings of Italy. It was their home until 1946.
In 1946, Italy became a republic. Since then, the Quirinal Palace has been the official residence and workplace for the Presidents of the Italian Republic.
