Who Was Pallig Tokesen?
Pallig Tokesen was a leader from Denmark. He lived during a time when Vikings often raided England. He was known as a chieftain, which is like a powerful leader or a military commander.
Working for King Ethelred
At one point, Pallig Tokesen was hired by the English King, Ethelred II. King Ethelred wanted Pallig and his men to help defend England. The King even gave Pallig gifts like houses, gold, and silver.
A Change of Sides
In the year 1001, a large group of Viking raiders arrived in Devon, England. Instead of fighting for King Ethelred, Pallig Tokesen decided to join the Vikings. He left King Ethelred, even though he had promised to stay loyal.
After Pallig joined them, the Vikings attacked and burned several towns. One of these towns was Teignton. After these attacks, a peace agreement was made with the raiders.
Pallig's Death
Pallig Tokesen is believed to have been killed on November 13, 1002. This happened during a terrible event known as the St. Brice's Day massacre. Many Danes living in England were killed on that day.
It is also said that Pallig's wife, Gunhilde, died with him. Gunhilde was the daughter of Harald Bluetooth, a famous King of Denmark. She was also the sister of Sweyn Forkbeard, another powerful Danish King.
Why Did It Happen?
Some people believe that King Sweyn Forkbeard's invasions of England, which started in 1002, were partly to get revenge for his sister Gunhilde's death.
Another idea is that Pallig's decision to switch sides and join the Vikings made King Ethelred very angry. Some historians think that the St. Brice's Day massacre might have been partly King Ethelred's revenge for Pallig's disloyalty.
