Pam Fredman was born on May 13, 1950, in Gothenburg, Sweden. She is a Swedish professor who studies the brain and nervous system, a field called neuroscience. She used to be the head, or "rector," of the University of Gothenburg. Since 2016, she has been the President of the International Association of Universities, which connects universities around the world.

Pam Fredman's Journey
Pam Fredman studied Chemical Engineering at Chalmers University of Technology. She earned her Master of Science degree in 1973. Later, in 1979, she received her Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Neurochemistry. This means she became an expert in the chemistry of the nervous system. Her special research paper, called a thesis, was about "Structure and Function of Gangliosides". These are important molecules found in the brain.
Leading Departments and Faculties
From 1995 to 1997, Pam Fredman was in charge of the Department of Clinical Neurosciences. This department focuses on brain and nervous system diseases.
In 1997, she became a professor of neurology at the University of Gothenburg. She also took on leadership roles in the Faculty of Medicine. She was the vice-Dean from 1997 to 1998. She continued to hold many important positions at the Sahlgrenska Academy, which is part of the university.
Between 2003 and 2006, Fredman was the director and dean of the Sahlgrenska Academy.
Rector of the University of Gothenburg
On July 1, 2006, Pam Fredman became the rector of the University of Gothenburg. The rector is like the principal or president of a university. It's a very important job! She was in this role for many years, until July 1, 2017. As rector, she was the main leader and representative of the university.
Other Important Roles
Pam Fredman has been a member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Engineering Sciences since 2008. This is a group of top experts in engineering and science.
She has also been on the board of several important organizations. These include the Swedish Medical Research Council (from 1999-2003), the International Society of Neurochemistry (1995-1999), and the Federation of European Neuroscience (1996-2001).
From 2016, Pam Fredman became the President of the International Association of Universities. This organization helps universities all over the world work together.
She also served on the board of the Swedish University and Higher Education Association (SUHF) from 2007 to 2014. She was even its chairman from 2009 to 2014.
Pam Fredman has written over 100 scientific papers. Her work has been mentioned by other scientists more than 4,700 times! This shows how important her research is.
