Pam Fredman was born on May 13, 1950, in Gothenburg, Sweden. She is a Swedish professor who studies the brain, a field called neuroscience. She was also the head, or rector, of the University of Gothenburg for many years.

Since 2016, Pam Fredman has been the President of the International Association of Universities. This important role means she helps guide universities around the world.

Pam Fredman's Education

Pam Fredman studied at Chalmers University of Technology. In 1973, she earned a Master of Science degree in Chemical Engineering. This means she learned how to design and improve chemical processes.

Later, in 1979, she earned her Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Neurochemistry. Neurochemistry is a special part of neuroscience that looks at the chemicals in the brain. Her PhD paper was about something called "Gangliosides," which are important molecules in brain cells.

Her Career in Science and Leadership

Pam Fredman has held many important jobs in science and education. From 1995 to 1997, she was the head of a department that studied the brain and nervous system.

In 1997, she became a professor of neurology at the University of Gothenburg. Neurology is the study of the nervous system and its diseases. She also became a vice-Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, helping to lead the medical school.

From 2003 to 2006, Fredman was the director and dean of the Sahlgrenska Academy. This is a big part of the University of Gothenburg that focuses on health sciences.

Leading the University of Gothenburg

On July 1, 2006, Pam Fredman became the rector of the University of Gothenburg. The rector is like the principal or president of a university. She was in charge of the whole university and its main representative.

She held this important position for 11 years, until July 1, 2017. During her time as rector, she helped guide the university and make important decisions.

Other Important Roles

Pam Fredman has also been a member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Engineering Sciences since 2008. This is a group of experts who advise on engineering and technology.

She has also been on the board of several other organizations. These include the Swedish Medical Research Council, which helps decide what medical research gets funded. She also served on boards for international groups focused on neuroscience.

From 2007 to 2014, Fredman was on the board of the Swedish University and Higher Education Association (SUHF). She was even its chairman from 2009 to 2014, helping to lead discussions about higher education in Sweden.
