Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Pamela Woods is a talented landscape designer and author known for creating beautiful and peaceful gardens. She was born in 1952 in Leigh, a town in Greater Manchester, England. In the early 1960s, she moved to Berkshire, another county in England.

Early Life and Education

Pamela always had a love for plants and nature. She studied Botany at the University of Nottingham, where she earned her degree. Botany is the scientific study of plants, including how they grow, their structure, and how they are used. This education gave her a strong foundation for her future career.

Designing Beautiful Gardens

After finishing her studies, Pamela began a career in landscape design. This involves planning and creating outdoor spaces, like gardens and parks, to make them beautiful and functional. In 1998, she started her own special design company called Sacred Gardens.

One year later, in 1999, Sacred Gardens achieved a big success. They won the Silver Gilt medal for their amazing feng shui garden at the Hampton Court Palace Flower Show. This is a very famous garden show in the United Kingdom. Feng shui is an ancient Chinese practice that focuses on arranging spaces to create harmony and balance. Pamela's garden showed how these ideas could be used to make a peaceful outdoor space.

Pamela continued to create impressive gardens through Sacred Gardens. She designed the Shinto Garden, which was a special project for the Queen's Royal Jubilee celebration. Shinto is a traditional Japanese religion, and Shinto gardens often feature natural elements arranged in a way that encourages peace and reflection.

A Published Author

In 2002, Pamela Woods shared her knowledge and passion for gardens in her book titled Gardens for the Soul. This book was published by Conran Octopus and Rizzoli, two well-known publishing companies. The photographs in her book were taken by John Glover, who won the Garden Photography of the Year award for his beautiful work.

Today, Pamela lives with her husband, James Showers, in Gloucestershire, a county in England. Their home is located near the River Severn, one of the longest rivers in Great Britain. Pamela has two children, Sarah Davis-Berry and Sam Plews.
