José Cortés Jiménez (born January 8, 1945 – died February 17, 2023) was a famous Spanish singer. He was known by his stage name, Pansequito. He was a master of Flamenco music.
Early Life and Beginnings
José Cortés was born in La Línea de la Concepción, Spain. His family had a strong flamenco background. He spent his childhood in Seville and later in El Puerto de Santa María. This last city gave him his first artistic name. In 2001, El Puerto de Santa María named him an adoptive son.
His Singing Career
Pansequito started his professional singing career in Malaga. He performed in special flamenco venues called tablaos. In 1963, a famous flamenco artist named Manolo Caracol hired him. Pansequito then moved to Madrid to work at Caracol's tablao, Los Canasteros.
Pansequito also traveled the world with the dance company of Antonio Gades. He sang in many countries, including England, Hungary, Yugoslavia, and Greece. People saw him as a fresh voice in flamenco. In 1974, he won the 'Creativity Award' at the National Contest of Córdoba. Juan de La Plata, a flamenco expert, said Pansequito won because he sounded different. He brought a new and exciting style to flamenco music.
In his later years, Pansequito often performed at flamenco festivals in Andalusia. He also visited festivals in other countries, like Mont de Marsan in 2007. In 2010, he received the XXIV Compás del Cante trophy in Granada.
Some of his well-known recordings include "A mi bahía" (2001) and "Un canto a la libertad" (2009). For "Un Canto a la Libertad," he won the Giraldillo for Singing at the Bienal de Flamenco in 2010. This album featured other great artists like Moraíto, Miguel Poveda, and Raimundo Amador.
